Twenty years on from his death, we dedicate this issue to the King of the Mountain, reliving every one of his Bathurst races, sitting down with the mates and 'mules' who were there from the first day to the last, and remembering the man behind the legend.

Inside every Brock Bathurst
Peter Brock won Bathurst nine times, but the victories tell only part of the story. Bruce Williams revisits every one of Brock's starts at Mount Panorama — from that first Holden Dealer Team Monaro in 1969 to the very last — to work out what exactly made him the master of the place. The mechanical sympathy, the way he read the mountain's camber and weather and rhythm better than anyone who raced there, and the moments that turned a quick, brave driver into the undisputed King of the Mountain.

Mates and 'mules'
Behind the King stood the mechanics, engine builders and team managers who made it all happen — some of them known as the 'mules'. Bruce Williams sat down with the people closest to Brock during his racing days, from Ian Tate, who was there the day a long-haired unknown turned up at Sandown in 1969 and was still beside the same man 37 years later at Goodwood, through to the last of them. Honest, emotional memories of the great man, and a reminder that Brock's greatest legacy may not be the trophies at all.

Birthdays with Brock
Wayne Webster shared a deep connection with Peter Brock — he even wrote a book on him. Brock died on his birthday, but before that the pair shared a birthday or two together, and Webster tells those stories here.

In a lighter chapter of the tribute, Wayne Webster recalls the time he took Peter Brock to a gay bar, and the trip the pair made driving around Australia, where they cheerfully blamed each other for only coming second.

Inside the AASA dispute
Bruce Williams traces the history of the Australian Auto-Sport Alliance — the body built in 2003 as a low-cost revolt against CAMS — and lays out the nine-defendant Supreme Court action now threatening to tear it apart. At its centre sits Stephen Whyte, the former Benalla Auto Club chief executive who, the club alleges, ran both the seller and the sanctioning body before emerging as one of its buyers. As categories walk away and Motorsport Australia moves in, we lay out the full picture — carefully separating what's alleged from what's been proven.
